Chennai, June 27:

Since taking oath as Chief Minister on 10 May 2026, C. Joseph Vijay has initiated a series of administrative decisions, welfare measures and policy directions aimed at implementing the government's election commitments and strengthening public service delivery across Tamil Nadu.

During its first Cabinet meeting, the government reviewed 436 election promises and development projects, directing all departments to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for time-bound implementation. Progress is being monitored through the Special Programme Implementation Department with an emphasis on transparency and corruption-free governance.

Among the government's flagship initiatives is the "Lady Singham" women's safety programme, aimed at strengthening women's police patrols, improving emergency response systems and ensuring faster action against crimes against women. Existing welfare programmes for women have also been continued.

In the transport sector, the government has retained free bus travel for women and continued concessional bus pass schemes for students with administrative improvements.

The administration has also prioritised improvements in government schools, expansion of student welfare measures and scholarships, strengthening of public hospitals and primary healthcare, and enhancement of preventive health programmes.

For the agriculture and fisheries sectors, the government has included welfare measures for farmers, fishermen and agricultural labourers in its implementation roadmap, alongside irrigation and rural infrastructure projects.

A statewide anti-drug campaign has also been launched, focusing on narcotics enforcement, action against illegal gutka sales and awareness programmes targeting youth and educational institutions.

Water security has emerged as another priority, with a five-year plan to provide 24×7 drinking water supply in municipal corporations while also pursuing restoration of the Cooum River and Buckingham Canal.

Following the ammonia leak incident in Tiruvallur district, the government ordered safety audits of hazardous industries and directed authorities to strengthen industrial safety protocols across the state.

Economic development remains a key focus, with initiatives to attract investment, promote industrial growth, support MSMEs and create employment opportunities.

The government has also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Tamil language and culture, including seeking national recognition for the Thirukkural.

On Centre-State issues, the administration has reiterated its demand for exemption from NEET, release of pending Central funds and greater autonomy for Tamil Nadu on selected policy matters.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly also unanimously adopted a resolution opposing Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu Dam Project, urging the Union Government not to grant clearance and seeking protection of Tamil Nadu's rights over Cauvery river waters.

The government has additionally expanded its Council of Ministers and appointed a Special Representative in New Delhi to strengthen coordination with the Central Government.

As of 27 June 2026, the administration has announced more than 10 major Cabinet and governance decisions, initiated implementation of 436 projects and welfare commitments, and adopted one major Assembly resolution while focusing on women's safety, education, healthcare, transport, drinking water, employment, agriculture, anti-drug enforcement and good governance.
