In the 134th episode of Mann Ki Baat on 31 May 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised India's mango growers and highlighted the global recognition enjoyed by Indian mangoes.
Calling mangoes an important part of India's culture and agricultural identity, the Prime Minister credited farmers for helping Indian varieties gain popularity both within the country and abroad.
However, even as the praise was being delivered, the 2026 mango season was facing significant challenges.
Japan Suspends Indian Mango Imports
Earlier in March 2026, a Japanese quarantine inspection team visited Indian Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT) facilities and reportedly identified deficiencies in pest-control and disinfection procedures.
Japanese authorities later announced that mango consignments certified on or after 25 March 2026 would not be accepted until corrective measures were implemented.
On 29 May 2026, Japan suspended imports of fresh Indian mangoes for the remainder of the 2026 season.
The affected varieties included:
Japanese authorities stated that the issue was related to quarantine and phytosanitary compliance rather than pesticide contamination.
Nepal Tightens Import Requirements:
During April and May 2026, concerns were raised in Nepal regarding pesticide residues in imported mango consignments.
Reports on 9 and 10 June suggested that Nepal had banned Indian mangoes. Nepal later clarified that imports had not been completely stopped but would be subject to stricter quality-control and phytosanitary requirements.
Weather Adds To Farmers' Problems:
The 2026 season also brought weather-related difficulties for growers.
Several mango-producing regions reported lower yields due to adverse climatic conditions. In parts of Maharashtra's Alphonso-producing belt, some local assessments reported severe crop losses in affected areas.
The combination of reduced production and export restrictions has increased pressure on farmers, traders and exporters during the peak season.
India's Major Commercial Players:
India remains the world's largest mango producer.
Some of the country's prominent commercial players in the mango sector include:
- Reliance Industries (Dhirubhai Ambani Lakhibag Amrayee, Jamnagar)
- IG International
- Kay Bee Exports
- KK Star Exports
- Shreevali Agro
The Bigger Picture:
The developments of 2026 highlight both the strengths and vulnerabilities of India's mango industry.
While Indian mangoes continue to enjoy global recognition and strong domestic demand, growers and exporters remain exposed to weather disruptions, international quality standards and changing trade regulations.
As India seeks to expand agricultural exports, maintaining compliance with international quarantine requirements may become as important as increasing production itself.
