Washington, June 23:

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the United States will take necessary action if Iran fails to honour the commitments made under a recently negotiated interim agreement aimed at easing tensions and paving the way for a broader peace settlement in the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said Iran must strictly comply with the terms of the agreement, adding that Washington would closely monitor its implementation.

"If they don't stick to the deal, we'll do what we have to do," Trump said, reaffirming that while diplomacy remains the preferred path, the United States is prepared to respond if the agreement is violated.

The remarks come shortly after Washington announced limited sanctions relief as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to encourage further negotiations with Tehran.

The interim agreement follows recent talks in Switzerland between senior U.S. and Iranian officials. U.S. Vice President JD Vance earlier described those discussions as having laid a "good foundation" for a comprehensive peace agreement.

According to officials, both sides have agreed to continue technical-level negotiations in the coming weeks, focusing on issues such as regional security, maritime stability, nuclear oversight and sanctions.

Despite signs of diplomatic progress, significant differences remain over key issues, including the scope of sanctions relief, Iran's nuclear programme and broader regional security arrangements.

Analysts believe the success of the peace process will ultimately depend on whether both countries honour their commitments and maintain constructive dialogue.

Trump's latest remarks underscore Washington's intention to balance diplomatic engagement with a firm stance on compliance as negotiations continue.
