Siwan, Bihar | 29 July 2026
The ongoing nationwide student agitation over the alleged NEET examination paper leak has intensified after a Bihar Police constable was suspended for firing an AK-47 rifle during protests in Siwan, an incident captured in widely circulated videos that has sparked political controversy and renewed scrutiny of police conduct.
The protests began over allegations of irregularities in the NEET examination and later expanded to include broader concerns relating to youth unemployment, accountability and education reforms. Demonstrations have continued across several states despite recent political developments.
During the Bihar Bandh on 25 July, videos showed a police constable running towards protesters while carrying an AK-47 rifle and firing several rounds into the air. Bihar Police confirmed that the weapon was discharged without authorisation, suspended the constable with immediate effect and initiated departmental proceedings. Senior police officials stated that the use of the assault rifle could not be justified and that the officer acted without orders.
The incident has triggered heated political reactions, with opposition leaders demanding an independent investigation into the use of force during the protests and accountability for those responsible. Government representatives have defended the disciplinary action against the constable, while broader political debate over the handling of the demonstrations continues.
The AK-47 firing has emerged as one of the defining images of the ongoing student movement, reigniting discussions over policing standards during public protests and the balance between maintaining law and order and safeguarding citizens' constitutional right to peaceful assembly. Investigations into the incident remain underway.
