Road construction taking place near a school during student dispersal hours in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
SRI VIJAYA PURAM, July 22:

Road construction and resurfacing works underway across several parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have prompted public concern over the timing of such projects, particularly when heavy machinery operates during school dispersal hours.

According to observations and concerns expressed by residents, a road construction site outside a school continued operating while students were leaving the campus. Heavy machinery, including a road roller, remained in use as children exited the school premises, leading some parents and commuters to question whether such operations could be temporarily paused until students had safely dispersed.

School dispersal periods are among the busiest times on local roads. Young children may not always be aware of the movement of construction equipment or heavy vehicles, increasing the importance of precautionary safety measures around educational institutions. While there is no indication that any accident occurred and no allegation that safety protocols were violated, residents have expressed concern that the proximity of heavy machinery to students could present avoidable risks.

Several members of the public have also questioned whether non-emergency road resurfacing and maintenance work could, where feasible, be scheduled during night-time or other off-peak hours when traffic volumes are lower. Supporters of this approach believe it could reduce congestion, improve public safety and minimise inconvenience to commuters.

Residents have suggested that authorities and contractors consider scheduling roadworks around school timings, temporarily suspending heavy machinery during student dispersal, deploying adequate traffic marshals and exploring night-time construction wherever practical.

Road infrastructure improvements continue to be welcomed by the public. However, many residents believe that careful planning and appropriate scheduling can help ensure that infrastructure development proceeds without compromising public safety, particularly the safety of schoolchildren.
