The Andaman & Nicobar unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has highlighted the sporting journey of island-born cyclist David Beckham Elkatohchoongo, calling for stronger sports infrastructure and training support for young athletes in Nicobar.
In a statement, the party described Beckham as an example of sporting talent emerging from the Islands and linked his journey to the need for better facilities and sustained institutional support for athletes.
David Beckham was named after the legendary English footballer by his football-loving family. Although he initially played football, he later took up cycling and developed into a national and international-level track cyclist. He represented India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2023 Asian Games, and reached the quarter-finals of the men's sprint at the Asian Games.
His achievements have also included a gold medal in the men's elite sprint at the 2025 National Games, where he represented the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The cyclist's journey has previously drawn national attention. In 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to him during Mann Ki Baat, highlighting his achievements in cycling and his journey from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands to the national sporting arena.
CPI(M) said that athletes from Nicobar require access to world-class sports infrastructure, modern training facilities, sports medicine and injury-treatment services, sports science and research, and sustained support to develop their potential.
The party's statement comes amid continuing discussion over the availability of advanced sporting facilities in the Islands and the challenges faced by athletes who have to travel outside the Union Territory for specialised training.
For young athletes from remote island communities, access to appropriate training infrastructure can be an important factor in progressing from grassroots competition to national and international levels.
CPI(M) Andaman & Nicobar Islands called for greater institutional investment so that emerging athletes can pursue sporting careers without being constrained by the limitations of facilities available within the Islands.
