The Andaman and Nicobar State Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) organised a Convention of Workers in Port Blair on October 3, marking the International Action Day of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU).

According to CITU, the International Action Day is observed on the foundation day of the WFTU. The 2026 programme was organised under three principal slogans: science and technology in the service of humanity rather than monopolies and the oligarchy of wealth; work with rights to meet contemporary workers’ needs; and an economy for progress rather than war and destruction. The convention was presided over by R. Surendran Pillai, President of the CITU State Committee, who spoke about the significance of the slogans adopted for this year's International Action Day. News CITU 3rd Oct 2026

Speaking at the convention, D. Ayyappan, Vice President of the CITU State Committee, said that, in his view, the benefits of scientific and technological development were increasingly concentrated among a small section of multinational companies and did not adequately reach ordinary people. B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary of the CITU State Committee, emphasised the need for workers to maintain unity to protect rights achieved over the years. News CITU 3rd Oct 2026

CITU State Committee Treasurer Anand Rajan also addressed the gathering. State Committee Secretaries P. Sathyapal and S. Chinnaiah were present.

Workers representing various unions in Port Blair town attended the convention, according to CITU.
