Shri TSG Bhasker, Chairman of the Campaign Committee of the Andaman and Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee (ANTCC), has urged the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to take immediate action on several issues affecting residents of Middle and North Andaman.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary of the A&N Administration, Bhasker raised concerns about healthcare facilities, road conditions, inter-island transport and difficulties faced by villagers in accessing essential services through online systems. He called for the concerned departments to address these issues on a priority basis.
Healthcare Facilities in Middle and North Andaman
Bhasker highlighted what he described as a shortage of essential diagnostic facilities at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Diglipur. According to his letter, the centre lacks blood-testing facilities, forcing patients to travel to Port Blair for investigations.
He called for CT scan and X-ray facilities at all CHCs, along with the appointment of qualified technicians. He also recommended MRI facilities at district health centres.
The ANTCC leader expressed concern over the reportedly non-functional generator at CHC Diglipur, stating that frequent power cuts were affecting patient care and hospital operations. He urged the Administration to repair or replace the generator to ensure an uninterrupted power supply.
Bhasker also called for regular visits by specialist doctors to CHC Diglipur, Dr. R.P. Hospital at Mayabunder and CHC Rangat, with particular emphasis on gynaecologists.
He said pregnant women were often compelled to travel to Port Blair for routine consultations and follow-up examinations, adding to their expenses and the difficulties associated with road and boat journeys.
Concerns Over PHC Kishorinagar Infrastructure
Drawing attention to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Kishorinagar, Bhasker cited damaged walls and ceilings, leaking roofs and shortages of essential medicines and medical equipment.
He called for a comprehensive inspection of all PHCs across Middle and North Andaman to assess their infrastructure and identify requirements for improvement.
NH-4 and Village Roads
Bhasker described NH-4 as a vital transport link for residents of Middle and North Andaman and expressed concern about its condition across several stretches.
He urged the Chief Secretary to take up the matter with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to expedite pending work.
He also emphasised the need for regular inter-island boat services with adequate passenger capacity to provide reliable transport options for residents.
Raising the condition of village roads, Bhasker said deteriorating road surfaces were making daily travel difficult for patients, schoolchildren, employees and other commuters.
He called for a comprehensive inspection by the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) and adequate funding for Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) to improve village roads.
Digital Services and Internet Connectivity
Bhasker also raised concerns about the growing dependence on online systems for essential services, including fertiliser procurement, Fair Price Shop transactions and ship-ticket bookings.
According to his letter, poor internet connectivity, frequent power cuts and limited digital literacy were creating difficulties for villagers. He said residents sometimes had to travel long distances to access a service, only to find that the online server was unavailable and that another visit would be necessary.
To address the problem, he urged the Administration to maintain offline and counter-based facilities alongside digital systems so that residents would not be denied access to essential services because of technical failures or connectivity problems.
Calls for Chief Secretary’s Intervention
Bhasker urged the Chief Secretary to intervene personally and issue necessary directions to the departments concerned to address the issues raised in his representation.
The demands cover healthcare infrastructure and staffing, road improvement, transport connectivity and access to essential public services in Middle and North Andaman.
The concerns and recommendations outlined above are those raised by Bhasker in his letter. The status of the individual issues and any response or action by the concerned departments were not established in the press release supplied to Dweep Tulika.
